Avoid costly agency mistakes. Use this checklist — scope, pricing, communication, IP ownership, and post-launch support — before hiring any digital partner.

The wrong agency costs more than money — it costs momentum.

After 75+ projects across software, web, and social, here are the questions we wish every client asked before signing anywhere (including us).

1. Have you shipped projects like mine?

Ask for case studies in your industry or tech stack, not a generic portfolio grid. Request references you can call.

2. Who actually does the work?

Will seniors build your project or will it be handed to juniors after the sales call? Clarify team composition and hours allocated.

3. How do you handle scope changes?

Change orders are normal. What matters is how they are priced and communicated before work starts.

4. What is included in the quote?

Design, development, hosting setup, SEO basics, training, warranty period — get it in writing.

5. Who owns the code and assets?

You should own 100% of IP at project completion. Avoid licenses that lock you into proprietary platforms.

6. What is your communication cadence?

Weekly standups, shared Slack channel, project dashboard — define it upfront. Silence is a red flag.

7. How do you estimate timelines?

Milestone-based delivery with dates beats "we will be done in about 3 months." Ask what happens if a milestone slips.

8. Do you offer post-launch support?

Bugs happen. Traffic spikes happen. Confirm SLAs for fixes and optional retainer for growth work.

9. How do you approach SEO and performance?

If they cannot explain Core Web Vitals, canonical URLs, and structured data in plain terms, reconsider for marketing sites.

10. What tools do you use?

Modern stacks (Next.js, React, Node, cloud hosting) are easier to hire for long-term. Obscure CMS lock-in is expensive to escape.

11. Can I see a sample contract?

Review payment terms, kill clauses, and liability before emotional commitment.

12. Why should I trust you?

Culture, transparency, and proof matter more than awards. Trust your gut after the discovery call.
